ABSTRACT
Educating the young generation’s political courage has been one of the key missions of the entire political system and higher education institutions in Vietnam. However, little literature provides a convincing account of the conceptualization of political courage and students’ political courage and to determine the components of political courage as the basis for the implementation and evaluation of educating students’ political courage. This article aimed to shed light on the conceptualization and components of political courage, investigating the training of university students’ political courage, with a case study of the institutions in North Central Vietnam to draw lessons learnt for tertiary education institutions in Vietnam and to provide a source of reference for other Asian semi-authoritarian regimes, especially China. This study utilized questionnaire-based method and discourse analysis that examined reports, newspapers, journal articles, and books. The findings showed that the effectiveness of cultivating students’ political courage resulted from appropriate pedagogical methodologies, beyond classroom activities, and students’ autonomy.
